SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has described the current persecution of Christian minorities in the Middle East and Africa as the worst oppression faced by faith groups since the early days of Christianity.

Mr Ramsey said: “I, like many others, have watched in horror at the acts of utter inhumanity being perpetrated in the name of faith in Iraq, Syria and across the Middle East. Those behind this sectarian war are blind to all religion, rationale and reason that doesn’t fit their fundamentalist agenda. The SDLP believe it is our moral duty to speak out against these unspeakable acts of barbarism, of mutilation and of savagery.

“Now is the time for swift and robust action from the International community. As leader of that community, the UN must take the necessary steps to put an end to these atrocities and to protect Christian minorities across the world.

“It’s important for the Assembly to send a message of solidarity with religious minorities that face such unjustifiable violence. The international community continues to look to this part of the world for inspiration when dealing with sectarian conflicts. We must be unwavering in our support of peace and an end to violence, wherever it occurs.”
