The first ‘preferential parking space’ in Buncrana is to be launched at Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana next Wednesday.
The need for the spaces was first identified by a group of young people at the school when they took part in a Young Social Innovators Project.
This was all about developing greater awareness of disability issues through education and practical project activities. The students became inspired following a talk by a parent of a child with autism and the challenges she faced going about her day to day business including the difficulties of parking when a child with autism is also in the car. The students felt a strong desire to do something to help and they identified the need for a Preferential Parking space for people with non physical disabilities as they cannot access the current disabled parking spaces. The logo incorporates ‘helping hands’ and a jigsaw piece which symbolises a figure.
