The proposal on the Peace Bridge today.

Shane Birney was walking along the Peace Bridge when an American tourist asked him to record the romantic moment he proposed to his girlfriend.

He then got down on one knee and produced an engagement ring. She said ‘Yes’

The Journal has now tracked down Mary Kate Baker and Anthony Helmholdt who are now back home in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Anthony was actually planning on proposing at the Cliffs of Moher but the weather forecast was not good so he changed his plan to Derry.

“He was amazed by the beauty of Derry and the sunny day really topped it off for him,” said Mary Kate. “He grabbed the ring prior to us taking a walk on the city walls and across the Peace Bridge (all of this without my knowledge) and upon reaching the centre of the bridge he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I, misty-eyed, said yes!

“I did not suspect anything before the proposal. The previous night in Belfast he told me that “he can’t see himself getting married for another 3-5 years”. I was a little upset and frustrated, but little did I know he had a plan for the next night.

“We called our family back home the night we got engaged but waited to tell our friends the next day. We wanted our family to know first.

“Ireland was an amazing Holiday for us and we will most certainly return again.”
