Colr. Sean McGlinchey made the call after what police said was a paramilitary-style shooting of a 22-year-old man in the Hass Road area last Wednesday night (October 19th) at around 8pm.

Republican group Óglaigh na hÉireann has reportedly claimed responsibility for the shooting.

“The community has to come out against this. This lad was brought from Derry and shot in Dungiven, and dumped on the roadside. The week before, shots were fired outside a house in Ard na Smoll.

People in Dungiven don’t want this, and now is the time to come forward and say ‘not in our town, we don’t want this’,” said Colr. McGlinchey.

The Sinn Fein man plans to meet with community groups this week.

Speaking about the shooting, Limavady DUP Colr. Alan Robinson hit out at what he branded “faceless cowards” who he said had warned “local businesses who serve members of the PSNI and security personnel”.

“Whether it’s the template used by the IRA in the past, or the current model used by these latest terrorist groups, they need to stop playing their war games and get off the backs of the local community,” said Colr. Robinson. “It is long past the time that these groups who skulk late at night get with the times and get the message that they represent no one but themselves.”
