Stormont’s Transport Minister has been urged to revisit plans for a parking scheme in and around Magee University “as a matter of urgency.” Earlier this month the Minister, Danny Kennedy, said proposals for schemes at Lawrence Hill and Northland Road were dependent on the successful implementation of pilot schemes elsewhere, including one in the Bogside area of Derry.
Rory Farrell, who is to stand as an SDLP representative in next year’s council elections, says the party’s local office has “been inundated with complaints from residents about parking difficulties in the streets adjacent to the Magee campus”.
“Everyone is in agreement that a parking scheme for residents is the way forward,” he said.
“While I welcome the fact that the Lawrence Hill and Northland Road areas are considered suitable, I am quite concerned that Rock Road, Aberfoyle and Duncreggan Road have been apparently overlooked.
“The residents of these areas have campaigned long and hard for a solution to the parking crisis but it seems from the Minister’s response that their proposals aren’t even being considered.”
Mr Farrell said “the current situation clearly needs urgent attention”.
