SDLP Waterside Councillor Martin Reilly has received unanimous support from fellow councillors to replace Gerard Diver as the party’s new Group Leader on Derry City and Strabane District Council.
Cllr Reilly said: “I am humbled by the unanimous support I have received to become the leader of our group on Derry & Strabane Council.
“Since I joined Council back in 2004 I have enjoyed a close working relationship with all of my Council colleagues over that period – especially during my term as Mayor in 2013.
“As a member of the SDLP Executive and continuing in my role as Parliamentary Assistant to Foyle MP Mark Durkan, I bring to the role of Group Leader a connection right throughout our party structures.
“I look forward to the challenges that this new role will bring as I lead our party in serving the citizens across the new Derry City & Strabane District.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to my predecessor Gerard Diver on his contribution not just as Group Leader but to the Waterside District, and I look forward to working well with him in his new role as Foyle MLA.”
