Result! Long wait over for Derry's A-Level students

Excitement was building as students reconvened at their schools to discuss post-exam celebrations and starting the next chapter in their lives at university, in employment or via further education.

Some schools and colleges in the city achieved record results this year. The Year 14 students at St Joseph’s Boys’ School in Creggan produced the best set of results in the school’s history with 100% pass rate and a 23% increase in the number of pupils securing three A-C grades across a wide range of subjects.

Principal Damien Harkin said: “I look forward to them continuing to build on their accomplishments as they embark on the next stage of their education and career, confident in their ability to succeed.

“On the pupils’ behalf I wish to thank our staff for the tremendous effort they make year on year to improve outcomes for our pupils.”

Marguerite Hamilton, Principal Thornhill College said said she was “so proud of all our girls” after they notched up a pass rate of 99.5%. We are particularly delighted for the 27 students who achieved 3+ A*/A grades, with nine of them achieving four A*/A grades.”

Miss Hamilton added: “These outstanding results reflect the hard work and dedication of students and teachers and the vital support of parents. Many of our students have already confirmed places at their first choice universities and we wish them well at this exciting stage of their academic careers. It is wonderful to see the smiles of girls who know that their commitment to study and collaboration with teachers has been so successful.”

In Bishop Street, meanwhile, Lumen Christi Principal, Siobhan McCauley, was also delighted with the achievement of their students.

She said: “We are extremely pleased with the results which reflect the hard work of our students, the commitment of staff and the unstinting support of parents.

“93 per cent of all grades were A*- C and 1/3rd of our students achieved an outstanding 3 As or more. We wish them all every success for the future.”

At St. Brigid’s College in Carnhill, meanwhile, Director of Learning Gerry McMonagle said: “We have had another year of excellent performance in A Level by our students.”
