The Rockmills complex on the Strand Road is to get a revamp after members of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee on Wednesday approved an application by Choice housing to remodel 86 existing shared living accommodation units and create 94 new self-contained dwellings.
Choice also intends developing new road surfaces, parking layouts and hard and soft landscaping.
The exterior of the block overlooking the River Foyle, which has been listed since the 1980s, won’t be affected by the works.
Sinn Féin Councillor Tony Hassan said: “Anything that will upgrade that area andmake it better than what it it is at the moment has to be welcomed.”
SDLP Councillor Angela Dobbins also welcomed the development, stating: “It would be nice to see a development in that area that was not only for students.”
