Rugby players escape BB gun attack

A Strabane councillor has spoken of his disgust after rugby players were shot at by youths armed with a BB gun.

Sinn Fein’s Jay McCauley said players from the Strabane and Carrickfergus teams were shot at during their match at Strabane Academy’s Milltown pitch on Saturday afternoon.

He said it was only “sheer luck” that no one was injured.

““I have been contacted by a representative of Strabane Rugby Club who related how, during their match with Carrickfergus at Milltown on Saturday afternoon a group of 3 to 4 youths with their faces covered fired BB gun pellets at players from higher ground overlooking the pitch.

“It was just by sheer luck that none of players were hit or seriously injured in this despicable and cowardly attack and I just despair at the mentality of those responsible.

“Those who carried this out are in no way representative of the young people in this area. The entire community will be united in their disgust at this attack and this message needs to be sent out loud and clear to those responsible,” he said.

A BB gun is a type of air gun that fires pellets.
