One of Derry’s most loved and respected businessmen has passed away.
James Doherty, owner of Doherty’s Meats passed away earlier this morning. He was 90.
A former councillor with the Nationalist party, James Doherty was a man committed to civil rights. He served on many education committees and was a member of the Knights of St Columbanus.
He was also a Papal Knight of the Order of Sylvester, appointed by the Pope.
However he is best known for his association with Doherty’s Meats, a company which was first opened in Derry in 1830.He is predeceased by his wife Phyllis. He was the father of Seamus, Ian, Thomas, Maire, Eibhlin, Filomena, Treasa, Niamh, Sean and the late Michael
His funeral will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Pennyburn Church. The wake will take place at 32 Baronscourt.
