Sadness as former councillor Denis McGonagle dies

Tributes have been paid to former Fianna Fail County Councillor for Inishowen, Denis McGonagle, who passed away on Monday.

Mr. McGonagle, who lived in Carndonagh, was a popular and extremely well-known member of the local community and was first elected to Donegal County Council in 1985.

Donegal North East TD Charlie McConalogue, who was co-opted on to Donegal County Council when Mr. McGonagle stepped down in 2008, described the father-of-fouras a “gentleman through and through.”

He said: “Denis served his community so well, in many ways, right throughout his life and was highly respected for that.”

Councillor Rena Donaghey, who served on the Council with Mr. McGonagle also described him as “one of life’s gentlemen” and expressed her sympathies to his wife, Mary Jo, family and friends.

Former Buncrana Town Councillor Joe Doherty, who served on a number of committees and boards with Mr. McGonagle said he was “very saddened” to hear of his passing.

He described him a “good friend” and said he had “worked very hard for the people of Inishowen.”

Donegal County Council adjourned its meeting for 30 minutes on Monday as a mark of respect to Mr McGonagle, who was in his late 70s.
