The 80-year-old retired judge, who has previously described the Bogside shootings as Derry’s “most terrible day”, said he was saddened to hear of Dr. Daly’s death.

Lord Saville added: “He was a remarkable man whose courageous actions on Bloody Sunday were commendable.

“Bishop Daly’s testimony on the events of the day was very powerful and of great assistance to the Tribunal. I extend my deep condolences to his family and congregation.”

The Saville Report, published in June 2010, was heavily critical of the British Army and found that soldiers fired the first shot on January 30, 1972.
