SDLP Councillor Shauna Cusack has urged people to exercise vigilance over the Christmas period as burglaries increase with thieves more aware that many homes will be stocked with valuable items.
She said: “I want to remind people to be aware of the threat of burglaries over the Christmas period. There are a number of steps everyone can take to reduce their chances of being targeted over the next few days and weeks. First of all I would advise everyone to make sure they haven’t placed expensive gifts in plain sight of windows or doors. Similarly you should avoid placing packaging for expensive electronic items, like TVs and games consoles, in full view of bins. This only advertises the contents of your home that would appeal to opportunistic thieves.
“Christmas is an exciting time and I want to wish everyone in the area a happy and peaceful holiday as they gather with family and friends. The last thing anyone needs is their holiday to be ruined by thieves so it’s important that we all keep ourselves, our homes and our neighbours safe. And if anyone notices anything suspicious, I would advise them to get in touch with the PSNI as soon as possible.”
