Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault in the Fountain Estate in the early hours of Saturday 16th May.
The attack is being treated as a sectarian hate crime.
At approximately 2.30am as two men aged in their 20’s were walking in the Wapping Lane area of the Fountain estate they were attacked by a group of approximately 6-10 unknown males.
Both men were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.
Inspector Les Craig said, “I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this assault or who has any information to contact Police at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
Local SDLP Councillor for the area, John Boyle, said it was “shocking” to hear of such assaults.
He continued, “In this day and age it is disappointing to hear attacks like this are still happening.
“I condemn the attack outright; there is no justification for a large group of people attacking individuals.
“Thankfully the injuries are not life threatening but they still had to be treated in hospital. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”
