Sinn Fein has been accused of “eulogising” the death of a teenage IRA member from Derry.
DUP MP Gregory Campbell spoke out as republicans last night held commemoration events in the city for 16-year-old Michael Meenan who died when the bomb he was transporting exploded prematurely in 1974.
The tribute was branded as “atrocious” by Gregory Campbell.
The East Derry MP said it would be more appropriate for republicans to acknowledge the “utter futility” of the teenager’s death.
However, Sinn Fein’s Tony Hassan branded Mr. Campbell’s remarks as “tired and outdated”.
“As with all commemorations, this will be a dignified and respectful event,” said Councillor Hassan.
