SF to enter Áras race

Sinn Féin announced its intention to field a candidate for the forthcoming presidential election at the weekend’s ard fheis.

While no candidate has been named as yet, party president, Gerry Adams, used his keynote address on Saturday evening to announce that Sinn Féin should be entering the race for Áras an Uachtaráin.

Mr Adams said choosing a candidate will be a matter for the Sinn Féin ard comhairle - the party’s ruling executive - which is due to meet this week to discuss the matter. It is believed that former agriculture minister Michelle Gildernew will be chosen to contest the poll.
