The Foyle Hospice has given Derry’s first citizen the prestigious number one spot at this year’s Female Walk which takes place in two weeks time.
Elisha McCallion who takes part in the event every year says she’s delighted to be given the number and urged women to come out in their thousands on June 7.
“It’s an honour to be given the number one,” she said.
“The Foyle Hospice is a very important cause and I know it is well supported every year but this year we want that extra push to get the 5,000.
“I would ask not only women in Derry but also Strabane to come out on June 7. And I ask the men to come out and support the women.”
The Mayor asked people to try and dig that little bit deeper to raise some sponsorship.
“Times are tight,” she said. “But I would ask people if they could raise just that little bit of extra cash.
“Get your work colleagues to sponsor you.”
There’s just under two weeks left to get registered.
The walk will begin at 1.30pm at Templemore Sports Complex finishing at Ebrington Square.
Last year almost 5,000 girls and women took part, and the Foyle Hospice are determined that because this is the 15th year of the walk they will make that magical number of 5,000.
Race packs are ready to be collected at the fundraising centre.
Noel McMonagle, Community Fundraising Manger said: “Our aim is to reach that 5000 mark and get as far over it as possible. I would also like to stress the importance of everybody’s sponsorship – we need our local community to know that every £1, £2, £5 or £20 makes such a huge difference.”
Entry is £7. Entry and sponsorship forms available from Foyle Hospice Fundraising Centre, 61 Culmore Road, 028 71359888 or Foyle Hospice Shop, Waterloo Place. Online registration at www.foylehospice.com.
