Shootings a '˜chilling reminder' of fragile peace

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has said that the shootings in Derry this week are a 'chilling reminder of the fragility of our '˜peace''.

Mr Durkan was speaking after a 48-year-old man was shot on both legs in a laneway off Glenowen Park on Wednesday night.

It comes just two days after a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg inside a bookmakers in Central Drive, Creggan on Monday evening.

Mr Durkan said that guns have no place on the streets and that “history shows us that these actions only create more violence and victims”.

Speaking this morning, he said: “Each and every one of these attacks needs to be condemned. We can’t become de-sensitised to this sort of thing. This isn’t normal, people getting shot in the street.”

Mr Durkan pointed out that in the past punishment style attacks have actually ended in murder, while there were other incidents of people being left with life-long injuries and witnesses, including young children, being traumatised.

Detectives meanwhile have appealed for information about the latest shooting, which was reported to police shortly after 9pm on Wednesday.

The victim of the attack was taken from the scene to hospital and is currently being treated for his injuries.

This is the second shooting to have occurred in Derry in two days.

On Monday evening a 23-year-old man was shot once in the leg inside a bookmakers at Central Drive in Creggan.

Detectives have issued an appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident at Glenowen or who has information about the shooting to contact detectives on 101 quoting reference number 1141 of the 29/3 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
