Talented Inishowen students have been announced as regional finalists in this year’s Junk Kouture competition.
Young people from Youthreach, Buncrana; Scoil Mhuire and Crana College, both in Buncrana and Carndonagh Community School, all vowed the judges and have made the northern regional finals of the nationwide competition, which had its beginnings in Inishowen.
The competition is Ireland’s leading fashion and art competition for second level students. Now in its fifth year, it aims to spark students’ imaginations and encourage them to create unique, original and innovative outfits from recycled materials and junk.
The competition is sponsored by Bank of Ireland and is also run in association with Repak and on Friday last, Bank of Ireland branch managers surprised students across the country by visiting their schools, accompanied by GAA stars.
While there, they gave them their ‘silver ticket’ to the upcoming regional finals in Derry’s Millennium Forum.
Students Amy McDaid, Mandy Kavanagh and Shauna Doherty from Youthreach, Buncrana were presented with their Silver Ticket for their entry ‘Candy Yum Yum’, by Buncrana Branch Manager, Liz Sullivan.
Along with ‘Candy Yum Yum’ from Youthreach, the other regional finalists are: Looming Marvellous; Ticket to the Runway, Winging It, Puzzle Maker and WireCan.net - all from Crana College students as well as Combustion; Reflection; Reclaimed; Caged Remnants and Fallen Dancer from Scoil Mhuire.
Ten entries from Carndonagh Community School have reached the finals. They are: Clockwork Diva, Energy Ball; Plastic Fantastic; Smoke and Mirrors, Sheer Glass; Elemental Monumental; Paraboloid; Coffee Sensation; Acrylic in Blooms and Doilies in Reverse.
They are joined by students from other second level schools including St. Louis Grammar School in Ballymena and Colaiste Ailigh in Letterkenny.
The regional heat at the Millennium Forum will take place on March 9th.
The Grand Final will feature the top 80 dresses chosen from four regional heats across the country (Northern, Western, Eastern and Southern) and will take place at the 3Arena, Dublin on 24th April 2015. Last year’s competition saw eight entries from Inishowen reach the final.
