Sinn Féin Councillor Brenda Chivers has welcomed Belfast City Council’s decision to impose penalties on Bonfire organisers for breaches of rules on burning of flags and other paraphernalia.

Cllr. Chivers said “The burning of any country’s flag or the poster of any election candidate cannot be deemed to be any kind of positive expression of culture. As such, Belfast City Council made the right decision in penalising the groups involved.”

“I would hope that this approach to these so called “expressions of culture” can be rolled out across the six counties, that is why i plan to put a similar motion through the new Causeway Coast and Glens council in the near future.”

“This comes after the PSNI in Limavady removed tyres from Halloween bonfires last week and I reiterate my call for them to do the same next July”

She added “I have raised this issue already with both Limavady council and the PCSP. Sinn Féin will not tolerate such an approach to cultural expression being funded by our ratepayers.”
