Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, officially opened Sinn Fein MEP, Martina Anderson’s, new European constituency office on Friday.
The office, which is located in Spencer House, is open to all members of the public and Ms. Anderson said during the opening that it was her intention to continue making Europe relevant to the people of Derry.
The Pink Ladies’ choir sang during the opening of the new office which was also attended by Collete Fitzgerald, Head of the European Commission Office in Belfast.
“My ethos since becoming an MEP is all about bring Europe to the people as well taking the people to Europe.
“One of the most common aspects all member states of the European Union share is that of health.
“The Pink Ladies breast cancer support group has played a big part locally in tackling the issues surrounding cancer care here.
“There’s an initiative within the EU called Horizon 2020, it’s an innovation programme focused on developing new ideas and it would be my hope that groups like the Pink Ladies could draw down funding from this programme.”
Ms. Anderson also confirmed that she will be leading a delegation to Brussels on December 8.
“I want to do all that I can to show people just significant the European Parliament is. It might be hundreds of miles away but it can impact upon the lives of local people,” she said.
