Sister Clare laid to rest on Monday

Derry family prepare for arrival of remains later on tonight

The funeral of Sister Clare, who was killed in the last week’s earthquake in Ecuador, will take place in the Long Tower Church on Monday at 12 p.m. Bishop Donal McKeown will be one of the celebrants at the Mass.

Three sisters from the Home of the Mother order where Sr. Clare was a member will attend the funeral service in Derry on Monday.

Sister Clare Theresa Crockett (33) from Iona Terrace in the Brandywell was among the 650 people to lose their lives in the tragedy last week.

In a statement issued last week Sister Clare’s relatives said: “We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who have contacted our family, visited the family home and donated to the effort to bring Sister Clare home to Derry.”

Father Brendan Collins from the Long Tower church said that Sister Clare’s family were relieved with the news that her remains were being brought home.

Sister Clare is the daughter of Gerard and Margaret, loving sister of Shauna and Megan, much loved aunt of Cahir, Lily, Kayleigh and Maisy.

The wake on Friday night will be private and is for family members only.

Speaking yesterday at the full council meeting in the Guildhall Mayor of Derry & Strabane, Sinn Fein Councillor Elisha McCallion said: “Our sincere sympathies are sent out to the Crocketts and the wider family.”

SDLP Councillor Martin Reilly said: “Sr Crockett was a pillar of strength for people in Ecuador.

“She was a great ambassador for this city.”

Tributes for Sister Clare have continued to pour in online from people across the globe whose lives she had touched.
