With towns ranging in name from Virginia to Kells, you’d be forgiven for being a little confused about your geography in Cavan.

But after spending five days in this beautiful part of the country it’s place I’ve definitely feel at home in.

With fantastic hotels, beautiful scenery and lots of places to visit Cavan is a placed that has really tapped into the family market.

The Slieve Russell Hotel located just outside Ballyconnell is the jewel in Cavan crown.

If it’s golf, relaxation and a bit of pampering then this is the place for you.

If you’re lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite, you’ll have more than enough room to enjoy your stay.

Each room has a fantastic bathroom (suites have jacuzzis and white bathrobes), shower and TV with plenty of channels.

We booked on the five night family package with accommodates families with up to five people.

Once your there the children (over the page of four) can avail of the kids’s club which runs every day during the summer holidays.

But what makes the hotel so family friendly is the pool.

Children are welcome in the pool at all times of the day. And that’s all that kids want when it comes to holidays.

The Slieve Russell’s Setanta restaurant is one of the finest I’ve ever eaten in - several diners were raving about the rack of lamb. The bar food isn’t bad either.

There’s no scrimping when it comes to breakfasts either. Choose from fresh croissants and orange juice or the finest Ulster fry.

The grounds on the Slieve Russell are breathtaking complete with its own secret garden.

We were lucky to have plenty of sunshine during our stay which make the walks all the more enjoyable.

A number of family packages are available at the hotel. For more information log on to
