With Killer Whale pods swimming in the Swilly and northern lights flashing through the skies in Ballyliffin, Inishowen was hit by yet another phenomenon yesterday as a tornado stormed through the skies outside Buncrana.

Local man, Daniel O’Callaghan was returning to his home at Slavery from Buncrana when he saw the twister over the mountain towards Carndonagh.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” explained Daniel. “It was absolutely massive, you really have to see it to believe it. It was huge I just ran inside and started taking loads of footage of it.”

The Buncrana man said the tornado stayed in the sky for about ten minutes before it disappeared and believes it did not hit the ground while it was there.

Similarly Buncrana woman Dawn Lambe captured the tornado whilst driving on the Cockhill Road yesterday.

“It was really weird and eerie,” explained the Buncrana lady. “I couldn’t believe it, it was mad and kind of scary. I thought to myself if this thing starts moving I’m getting out of here.”

Met Eireann confirmed there was a funnel cloud over Slieve Sneacht yesterday around 11.30am. A forecaster also warned there could be a repeat performance today.

“It’s hard to pin point these things but the weather conditions today were very unstable and there was torrential downpours in some areas. The winds were slack in the atmosphere and these are all the ingredients needed for the formation of a funnel cloud.

“The same conditions will be there or even worse tomorrow [Tuesday] so there could be a chance of repeat performance.”
