A local woman, whose family have been touched by cancer, is calling on the Derry public to take to the streets later this month and raise money for the Sperrin Suite at Altnagelvin Hospital.
Bernie Fox, a mother of three, from Shantallow, is organising a 10k sponsored walk in aid of the specialist cancer unit at Altnagelvin which treated her mother, Mary Coyle, when she was diagnosed with cancer after Christmas 2010.
“Cancer has touched my family in the last few years,” says Bernie. “My mother has been battling cancer for over a year. She’s doing great now, thanks to the help and support of the fantastic staff at the Sperrin Suite. I just want to give something back to them. Everyone, it seems, knows someone who has been affected by cancer. I’m calling on them to come out and help me raise money to make the lives of those receiving treatment at the suite a little more comfortable.”
Bernie, who raised over £4,000 at the sponsored walk last year, is also appealing for businesses and shops to help by donating items such as water, energy drinks and crisps to the walkers on the day.
“We had such great help last year,” she said. “The people from St John’s Ambulance, in particular, were fantastic.”
Anyone who would like to take part in the walk, which leaves Shantallow Community Centre at 12 noon on June 26, and would like a sponsorship form should contact Bernie on 07871 601607.
