Two explosions have been reported at the departures area of Zaventem airport at around 7am this morning, followed an hour later by a further blast at Maelbeek metro station near to the stop off for those visiting the European Union.

Stating that his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and survivors, Martin McGuinness said: “This morning’s attacks on people at airport and metro stations in Brussels are deplorable and I condemn them unreservedly.

“My thoughts, as with everyone in Ireland at this time, will be with those killed or injured.”

A 100-strong delegation, including 10 Derry people, were on route to Brussels when the attackers struck. Some were diverted in mid-air while others, including the Derry group, were stopped just minutes before boarding the Eurotunnel bound for the EU for two days of commemorative events to mark the 1916 Centenary.
