Members of the Derg/Glenelly (Sperrin) Branch of the SDLP have revealed that they are one of the nine branches who nominated Colum Eastwood MLA to contest Alasdair McDonnell for party leadership at the November SDLP conference.
Barney McDermott, chairman of the branch said: “This branch supports Colum in his bid for leadership of the party.
“We feel that after the last four years of Alasdair’s stewardship the party needs a change.
“Our vote has dropped during this period but more importantly our appeal to the younger voter has never been realised. We feel that Colum will appeal to the younger electorate and will be inspirational. In our opinion the SDLP Assembly MLA group cannot be lead from Westminster, even other parties accept this code. We hope Alasdair takes on board the massive growing support for Colum and steps aside avoiding a divisive internal election.”
Councillor Patsy Kelly added: “I know Colum very well. He has my 100% support. He is articulate, energetic and committed to the ideals of the SDLP. I’m sure to challenge the leadership was not an easy decision for Colum to make but I know that he will make a great leader and he has all our support. He is what this party badly needs and all of us in this branch wish him every success and would fondly like to say, “Thank you every much Mr Eastwood.”
