Three killed in second Letterkenny roads tragedy

Three people have been killed in a road crash in the Letterkenny area, bringing the death toll on the roads around the town to five in just over 24 hours.

Gardaí in Letterkenny this morning appealed for witnesses following a second collision with multiple fatalities.

At around 1am this morning two cars crashed in an area known as Corravaddy, about 4 miles from Letterkenny.

A Garda spokesman said: “Three persons, two males and one female, were pronounced dead at the scene. “Another male was seriously injured and has been taken to Letterkenny University Hospital.

“The scene is currently closed to traffic and diversions are in place.”

Garda forensic collision investigators have been requested to examine the scene and the local coroner has been notified.

The garda spokesman said: “Investigations are ongoing and no further information is available at this stage, further updates will follow. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.”

The crash is the second to rock Donegal in just over 24 hours.

At approximately 4.45am on Wednesday a car collided head on with a van on the inbound carriageway of the N13 (dual carriageway) at Trimragh, Letterkenny.

The occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

The men have named locally as Dermot Boyle and Barney McGinley, who are understood to come from the Letterkenny area.

The 40-year-old driver of the van was taken by ambulance to University Hospital, Letterkenny. His injuries are serious but not thought to be life threatening.
