SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has appealed to young people from the Collon Lane area of Derry to think about the consequences of lighting fires.

Speaking after visiting a number of homes in the Collage Glen area, which backs onto the Collon Lane Estate Councillor Tierney said: “I would appeal to young people in the area to think about the damage their actions could cause. There were two substantial fires in this area on Saturday which have caused damage to properties which back onto the Collon Lane.

“Thankfully, no one was hurt and the damage is not of a serious nature but young people need to realise that once a fire is lit no one has control of where and how quickly it can spread.”

Colr. Tierney added: “We are lucky we are not dealing with something more serious and we are thankful for that but the homes I visited tonight the residents are rightly concerned about the action of young people in their neighbouring estate.

“I have tonight spoken to PSNI neighbourhood police officers and they have assured me they will show a presence in the area.”
