The Wedding Fair with a difference will be held in a marquee on Ebrington Square on May 14 and 15 from 12 noon to 6pm.

It comes after it emerged that a couple from the US are planning Star Wars-themed nuptials through Wicked Weddings at Malin Head, where the latest film in the series is currently being filmed.

The Derry event is open to all, with tickets priced at £8 or 10 euro. 70% of this fee going to three local charities.

Wicked Weddings founder Fiona Forkan said the decision to bring the firm to the North West was taken due to the rise in demand, coupled with the rising profile of the region, with the help of ‘Star Wars’ at Malin Head, ‘Game of Thrones’ in County Derry and ‘Vikings’ also filming in Ireland.

Ms Forkan said: “We have been getting calls from Italy, from America. It is a bit of a role reversal- where we would have been done destination weddings before, people are coming here now looking for a nice alternative.

“With the North West, how much more scenic can you get, with Celtic ancient sites, old castles, and the views are just gorgeous.

People are stepping away from Dublin and going further, and the North West is so beautiful.

“It is featured on all these shows and there is no photoshop needed if you look around Inishowen and Buncrana and across the area. People are flying into Derry and there’s so much to be offered around Derry, Tyrone, Donegal, with fabulous hotels to come and stay in. It is definitely up and coming.”

Wicked Weddings cater for everything from the traditional to the outlandish.

The fair in Derry will feature a range of Irish, UK and international wedding venues and suppliers, with the quirkiest of the quirky celebrants to entertainers etc.

“We are bringing a bit of the circus/fun element and it is for all kind of dreams, whatever you can dream and nothing is too out there,” Fiona said.

“There is nothing out there we can’t do. If somebody wants to have a Fire Juggler or Darth Vader performing at their ceremony, we will arrange that.”
