The Moville-Greencastle area was in mourning last night after a 25 year-old local man was killed in the early hours of yesterday morning when his vehicle left the Greencastle Road and struck a telegraph pole.

Describing the incident as “every parent’s worst nightmare,” local Councillor Martin Farren said the death had “numbed the entire community.”

The deceased was named as Moville man, Shane McMonagle, who had been travelling toward Greencastle when the crash occurred three miles from his home town.

Garda in Buncrana were informed of the accident at 4.25am.

Mr. McMonagle was a marine engineer aboard a fishing boat and came from Ballinally, Moville. He was also a part time DJ, his Facebook page poignantly stating: “I love Music, I Love Football and Most Of All I Love Life!”

His Facebook page was yesterday inundated with friends leaving messages expressing their grief and shock at the death.

One friend heart-wrenchingly wrote: “God has gotten lucky today. A DJ has gone to him, so when you hear the angels whisper Shane, be sure to go to them.

“I’m sorry it was sudden and I’m sorry your life was short. Time now to let God see what we all saw from the start.”

Another friend wrote: “u will never be forgotten hun - we’l always remember the good times - n the sessions, and the tuneage - always in our hearts and minds - miss ya budd (sic)”

In a heartbreaking coincidence, the death occurred on the same stretch of road which claimed the life of Shane’s uncle, Mark, 23 years ago.

Donegal County Councillor Martin Farren, who is a friend of the family, said: “This is just a parent’s worst nightmare.

“The family are well respected in the whole community and this is just an awful, awful terrible accident.

“The whole community is in shock. It has numbed the whole community.”

“I know the young fella and he was a fine fella, a hard worker who was in the prime of his life. What can you say except that your heart goes out to the family on this sad day? They are in our thoughts and prayers.”

The scene of the accident on the Greencastle Road was closed for some time yesterday as Garda technical officers conducted enquiries.

Appealing for witnesses a Garda spokesperson said: “A man in his mid 20s was fatally injured when his car left the road and collided with a telegraph pole. He has been removed to Letterkenny General Hospital.

“The road has been closed pending completion of an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.”
