Met Éireann has advised that the big winds are due to arrive in northern areas later this afternoon.

Over the coming hours, it states, “rain, heavy in places, twill clear eastwards with clearer weather developing soon along the west coast steadily extending eastwards, bringing scattered heavy showers and cooler, fresher weather”, which will be followed by the high winds.

“Frequent showers this evening and early tonight will die away by morning. Temperatures will fall slowly overnight and will be at their lowest after dawn on Thursday, reaching between 3 and 6 degrees. Strong northwesterly winds will ease overnight.”

The UK’s Met Office forecast for the local area meanwhile concurs that tonight will be “rather cloudy with showers becoming frequent for a time”.

“Clear periods developing later and turning much colder. Windy with strong northwesterly winds, coastal gales, then winds easing down by morning. Minimum temperature 3 °C.”
