Tributes to Dean after election to Dublin Cathedral

The Catholic Administrator of the Derry Diocese has paid tribute to the Dean of St Columb's Cathedral on becoming the new Dean of CoI St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin.

Father Michael Canny said that Rev William Morton has worked tirelessly for the benefit of Derry during his long tenure in the city.

Rev Morton (59) has spent almost 20 years at St Columb’s Cathedral, and is credited with having diversified the role of the historic cathedral, hosting a number of cross-community and ecumenical events in the form of exhibitions, lectures, seminars and guided tours. He has also been very involved in numerous community and cross-community initiatives.

Fr Canny said: “I have worked closely with him over the years and I want to join with others in offering my congratulations and best wishes. He will be a very big loss to our city in my opinion. He worked well with everybody, all the different communities, and I always found him amicable, committed to the faith and also committed to the city and the people of the city. Dublin’s gain is our loss.”

The Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Right Rev Ken Good describing the election of Dean Morton as “a fitting recognition of his highly effective work”.

Bishop Good said: “William’s ministry in St Columb’s Cathedral, in the Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe, and in the wider church and community, has been selflessly exercised and greatly appreciated.

“His liturgical proficiency, pastoral dedication and musical expertise are ideally suited to cathedral ministry.”
