Tributes to Donegal woman following Kerrykeel tragedy

Tributes have been paid to the Donegal woman who lost her life after her car went off a pier in Donegal at the weekend.

Fiona Doherty (nee Gallagher), who came from the Letterkenny area, was pronounced dead after her remains were retrieved from the water off the Fanad peninsula close to the seaside village of Kerrykeel on Saturday afternoon.

Funeral Mass for the 36-year-old will take place on Wednesday at 11am in The Church of The Irish Martyrs, Ballyraine with internment afterwards to New Leck Cemetery.

Jim McGlynn, Club Secretary of Letterkenny Gaels GAA Club paid tribute to Fiona Doherty, who was a member of the club, via their Facebook page.

Mr McGlynn said: “It is with great sadness that I write this message to convey news of the tragic passing of our esteemed Club Member, Fiona Doherty. Fiona gave generously of her time and I found her bubbly enthusiasm both enjoyable and inspiring in everything we all conspired to do for our Club.”

Mulroy Coast Guard, the Sligo 118 helicopter and expert divers were involved in the recovery mission after the alarm was raised by eyewitnesses at 1.30pm on Saturday.

The vehicle was also recovered from the waters.
