‘Unprecedented’ rush for Clipper gig tickets

Thousands of people queued at locations in the city centre yesterday eager to get their hands on free tickets for the hotly anticipated Clipper Homecoming concerts at Ebrington.

Hot on the heels of the Peace One Day concert which saw revellers pack the former military base on Thursday, organisers believe the concerts in early July will be equally as big a draw for members of the public from Derry, the North West and beyond.

On Thursday July 5 and Friday July 6 organisers will hope to repeat what was described as the ‘electric’ atmosphere of this week which saw the city host its first major outdoor concert.

Those who get their hands on free passes for the event on July 5 will be treated to a host of local talent including The Undertones, Paul Casey, Paddy Nash & the Happy Enchiladas and Best Boy Grip.

On Friday July 6 a special ‘Clipper Concert’ will celebrate links with the countries participating in the race. Special performances from the Saw Doctors, James Peake Xperience, Red Hot Chilli Pipers and Eoghan Quigg as well as a spectacular Fireworks on the Foyle Display will set the stage alight for thousands of revellers.

Speaking last night, Foyleside Manager Fergal Rafferty said there had been unprecedented demand for tickets at the centre, which were available yesterday between 1pm and 3pm.

“There was just a massive response and we were kept very busy with people keen to get tickets for what are set to be fantastic events,” he said.

Mr. Rafferty said the centre was delighted to be a key player in the Clipper Homecoming Festival.

“We anticipate thousands of visitors to the city and to Foyleside from outside our usual catchment area in the coming weeks and they are all very welcome.

“We certainly didn’t anticipate as many people who showed up in the centre yesterday for tickets but we’re absolutely delighted with the response and delighted that we can play an integral part in such an exciting time for the city.”

Those who missed out on tickets during yesterday’s allocation will have another chance in the coming days to get tickets.

A second release of tickets will be available for collection from information points along the Quay during the Clipper Homecoming Festival from 29th June, 2012. Tickets will be limited to two per person.

Tickets will be given out to over 16’s as under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult.
