Long serving SDLP Councillor Sean Carr has resigned from the party, but will remain on the Derry City and Strabane District Council as an Independent representative.

It is understood Mr Carr tendered his resignation to party chiefs yesterday, Wednesday, April 22, 2015.

The now former SDLP man has said he ‘regrets’ having to make the decision but felt that he had no option to do so.

The move is the latest development in a long running dispute between Mr Carr, who has served as a Councillor for 14 years and the SDLP locally. He had formally claimed the SDLP had orchestrated a campaign against him in the days leading to local elections last May. He also blamed elements within the party for making allegations about his son, former Councillor Jimmy Carr, about misused of a Council owned Ipad. Jimmy Carr was later cleared of any wrongdoing by police, although he later resigned following the publication of a story concerning him in a national newspaper.

The SDLP locally continue to refute Mr Carr’s version of events.

Sean Carr was successfully elected in last May’s poll. His resignation means that the SDLP no longer have any representation in the Moor Ward.
