There was a major gorse fire on the outskirts of Derry yesterday.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue said that in total 40 fires were reported across Counties Derry and Tyrone in a single day, some of which were accidental but others had been started intentionally.
Fire Commander Kieran Doherty said that the fire on a hill at Ardmore spread across a mile.
“You have to attack it from both sides, and a lot of personnel need to be deployed - we always have to be very vigilant for risk to life and property.”
“If the wind changes, a fire can turn on its head very quickly,” he said.
