Land and Property Services said the bill includes any unpaid arrears from previous years, along with any rate relief where applicable.

They added that at last count there were 67,000 rateable properties across the new Derry City and Strabane District Council, with over 50 per cent of property owners paying by direct debit.

A Land and Property Services spokesperson said: “This money is vital for our local economy, as it is invested in public services such as healthcare, education and roads as well as helping to fund numerous council services, including recreational facilities, building control, bin collection, tourism and local events.

“As in previous years, there are a number of other ways to pay, including online via the nidirect website: www.nidirect.gov.uk/campaigns/a-guide-to-rates, at any Post Office or PayPoint outlet using the ‘Rates Quick Pay Card,’ by phone or in person at an LPS Customer Info Centre.”

For domestic ratepayers, there is a four per cent. discount if they pay in full on or before May 6th.

Mayor Elisha McCallion said: “Rates funding allows Council to progress with its ambitious £64m. capital investment programme. The rates provision for 2016/17 allows us to deliver on key projects such as the regeneration of Brooke Park, Brandywell Stadium redevelopment and playpark provision.”
