A Derry-based energy company has warned people they could be dicing with death by installing so-called magnets to alter electricity usage.

Budget Energy Ltd, which employs 50 people locally, have vowed to lead a crackdown on those stealing electricity this summer.

Chief Executive Eleanor McEvoy said that many involved in the criminal activity right across the north didn’t realise when magnets are attached they effectively disabled the safety trip switch, meaning the risk of electrical fires rose massively.

She said that those caught face a criminal record, but said people can avoid this if they come clean now and pay back what they stole.
