Derry’s mayor Brenda Stevenson last night said the city had been left devastated by the death of Martin McCrossan.
“I never imagined that in my last months as Mayor I would be opening a book of condolences for one of the finest ambassadors and sons of this city.
“Mark Durkan described Martin as ‘Mr Derry’ and that just about sums him up.
“Martin always spoke with once voice for this city.
“We are lost and sore by Martin’s death and our hearts go out to his family.”
The Mayor said she would remember Martin for the happiness he brought to people.
“He always met you with a smile and his arms outstretched. He made you feel like you were the centre of the universe.
“The City is in mourning tonight. Our thoughts and prayers are with Martin’s family.”
The mayor encouraged local people to sign a book of condolence which was opened in the Guildhall on Friday night.
The condolence book will remain open until next week.
