The family of Derry teenager Kerry Crocker who died suddenly this week say they are devastated at the loss of their “beautiful girl.”

Kerry, from Whitehouse Park in the city, died on Thursday morning while undergoing surgery for a heart defect at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital. Just days earlier the stunning dental nurse trainee had celebrated Derry’s Big Weekend at Ebrington and enjoyed a family meal for her father Nick’s birthday on Monday, before being admitted to hospital early on Tuesday.

Speaking from the family home on Friday, her sisters Nichola, Amy and Lisa said Kerry’s last wish before she was wheeled to surgery was that she would always be remembered.

“She just asked us not to forget her,” said Lisa.

“As they were wheeling her in and we said goodbye she was joking and laughing. Even though the nurses were telling her not to sit up on the bed, she insisted on sitting up and waving to us, and even though we didn’t know it at the time, that was the last time we’d see her.”

Former Oakgrove student Kerry was a classmate of Britain’s Got Talent star Jordan O’Keefe who said he was stunned to hear of her death and pledged to dedicate his performance to Kerry during his semi-final appearance on last night’s show.

“She would have absolutely loved that, Jordan giving her a mention,” said Nichola. “She’d been watching him on the show and she was so proud. She kept telling everyone how she knew him from school. She would just be over the moon with him.”
