It will cost a whopping half a million pounds to dismantle The Venue - Derry’s temporary City of Culture concert hall at Ebrington - when it’s pulled down in the New Year.
Final confirmation that The Venue is to come down in January came yesterday from DSD Minister Nelson McCausland.
He revealed that there was no interest from the private sector to keep and run the £4.8 million facility after 2013.
In fact, a recent information day organised to gauge the extent of private sector interest attracted just ONE potential investor.
It’s emerged that the cost of running The Venue when no events are on has averaged almost £6,000 per month over the first nine months.
Foyle MP Mark Durkan described The Venue as “a huge asset” and said its loss was regrettable.
“We need a venue of such scale and capacity as a permanent fixture in the city,” he said.
