Derry will host one of world music’s biggest events during its year as city of Culture.
Deputy first minister Martin McGuiness this morning announced that WOMAD - the World of Music Arts and Dance festival co founded by Peter Gabriel - will come to Derry in 2013.
“This will bring the world to our city and we can tell our story to a global audience,” Mr McGuinness said at the launch in Derry’s Cafe Del Mondo this morning.
“ Do not underestimate the importance of this announcement. This is great news for this city, the country and for the promoters of the City of Culture.”
Chris Smith Director of WOMAD says ‘WOMAD are delighted to be working towards taking part in the celebrations of Derry as the first UK city of culture. We very much look forward to bringing the World to Derry but more importantly working with the organisers to take Derry to the World.”
Since the first festival in the UK in 1982, WOMAD has held more than 160 festivals, creating events in twenty-seven countries and islands all over the world, including: Abu Dhabi, Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, Sardinia, Sicily, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, UK, and the United States of America.
