Graham Warke of the DUP raised the matter at this week’s meeting of the Environmental committee held in Strabane on Wednesday.

In December last year Alderman Warke said it was time for a revamp of the memorial before the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in July. “This issue is breaking my heart,” said Alderman Warke. “When will it be repaired or cleaned up?”

Karen Phillips from Derry City and Strabane District Council said that in the next month a report will be made available so members of the committee can be updated on work on the memorial in the Diamond.

She said that the report should include details of the technical aspects that need to be addressed as part of the work. Ms. Phillips said that work on the war memorial in Strabane should be relatively straightforward adding that work had already begun on the war memorial in Castlederg.

“The paper we bring next month will have full details,” she said.
