Sinn Fein councillor Tony McCaul said the plan for a new facility was initially developed by the former Limavady Borough Council in 2014, but the idea first arose back in 2011.

A proposal to proceed with the legacy project at Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council received the green light from the majority of councillors on the Causeway Coast and Glens Leisure and Development committee.

The move was subsequently ratified at a full Council meeting last Spring.

Colr. McCaul explained Council owned a field and, following representations, officers conducted consultation, asking people what they wanted.

“People said a play park followed by things like allotments. After all the consultation with Feeny Community Association, here we are.

“This is the first phase of the £70,000 play park,” said Colr. McCaul.

“Looking at the design plans, this is a state-of-the-art facility. It will be a fantastic asset for the community and one which they will have on their doorstep.

“The facilities in Feeny, which has a population of over 2,000 people and around 500 children, are poor.

“I know parents who travel elsewhere to use play parks in Gortnaghey, Dungiven and Claudy.

“It’s great to see the diggers on site and finally see work starting, which is not before its time either.”

Colr. McCaul added; “The local community association was really involved and it’s just great to see it all coming to fruition. It’s fantastic news for the community.”

The new park will have equipment suitable for children aged 0 to 12 years.

A spokesperson for Causeway Coast & Glens council said: “The contractor has commenced on site and the contract completion is the end April 17.

“Contract value is just under £70k. The project is funded by the Landfill Communities Fund. The contractor is Garden Escapes, Ballynahinch.

“The play equipment includes a zip wire, two separate climbing frames and slides, a climbing rope structure, a range of swings, a roundabout and a see-saw.”
