Young Derry woman, Rebecca Doherty, impresses at classical music showcase

Rebecca Doherty (17) from the Culmore Road was one of only seven finalists at the 2016 Top Security Fr Frank Maher Classical Music Awards, Ireland's largest classical music competition for secondary schools.

A sixth year student at Lumen Christi College, Rebecca plays the recorder and performed two pieces on the night, ‘Concerto in F Major, 3rd Movement’ by composer Giuseppe Sammartini and ‘Prelude and Tarantella’ from Suite for Recorder by composer Gordon Jacob.

Rebecca is the first student from Derry to reach the Final of these Awards and she received a 250 euro bursary.

Emmet O’Rafferty, chairman of Top Security, said: “Congratulations to Rebecca on reaching the final. Father Frank Maher was a mentor of talent in many areas of school life and was particularly passionate about classical music. I know that he would have been very proud of all the performances at this wonderful venue and I wish Rebecca the very best in her future career”.
