Dining out at a fancy restaurant is a staple activity for Valentine’s Day, with millions of loved-up couples toasting to their relationship over a delicious meal.

While a restaurant meal is always tempting, sometimes cooking at home can be much more romantic - and it can save you a few pennies, too.

If you are planning to surprise your Valentine with a meal at home on 14 February, Morrisons is selling a luxury Chateaubriand for a fraction of the price restaurant diners pay - but the quality is just as good.

The supermarket is offering couples one of the most expensive fillet cuts of steak for a mere £31/kg at its butchery counters.

The same cut in a restaurant will set diners back a hefty £130/kg - four times the price of the supermarket steak.

Cut from the thickest part of the beef fillet, the Chateaubriand is known as the crème de la crème of steaks, and is easily prepared by flash frying it on both sides, before finishing it off in the oven.

Cut price meats

Morrisons is the only supermarket to offer the Chateaubriand all year round, with couples able to bag it for a bargain on Valentine’s Day, at £31/kg.

Waitrose is also selling a Chateaubriand to mark February 14, but it costs nearly double the price at £29.99 for less than half the meat (0.49kg).

Morrisons is also offering a third off sirloin steaks, priced at £13/kg until Sunday 16 February.

Customers can also get a free heart-shaped butter with every steak purchased from its butchery counters, which are pink in colour and infused with pink peppercorn for that added romantic touch.
