DERRY GAA: Friday deadline for Live Life Lisa Orsi Foundation applications

The countdown is on. In just over 15 weeks, a group of young Gaelic footballers, hurlers and camogie players from clubs across the city will be jetting off on the first leg of an amazing adventure to China.

Up to 40 young people and mentors will be selected to travel to the 2016 Asian Gaelic Games in Shanghai in November. The trip is being organised by ‘The Live Life Lisa Orsi Foundation’, a legacy project to celebrate the life of Lisa Orsi (22), a young Derry Gaelic footballer who died in March 2015.

Lisa played Gaelic locally with Ardmore Ladies and with Thornhill College. While working in Singapore as a physiotherapist, she played with Singapore Lions GAA and was a member of the Lions’ team that lifted the Ladies Gaelic Football Cup at the 2014 Asian Gaelic Games in Kuala Lumpur.

After she died, the Asian Gaelic Games Ladies Senior Cup for football was renamed in her honour and her father Dennis, travelled to the 2015 Asian Games to present the cup to the winning team. Lisa’s organs were donated after she died, giving people in need of a transplant a new lease of life.

To facilitate the organisation of the trip, all club secretaries are reminded that Expression of Interest forms should be submitted by today (Friday, July 15th).

“Lisa loved life and lived it to the full, packing so much into her 22 years. This project recognises her amazing enthusiasm for life, her love of Gaelic Games and unquenchable thirst for travel and adventure,” explained Foundation Chairman, Mark Doherty.

“This is a legacy project targeting 17–22 year olds and one we hope it will grow year on year. We want to encourage a positive attitude to sports participation and health and wellbeing among young people, as well as promoting an increased awareness of organ donation and the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.”

The provisional cost of the trip will be £1,500 per participant. Participants will contribute £500 towards the cost of the trip themselves; £500 will be raised through fundraising, with the support of the local clubs; and the remaining £500 sourced from sponsorship.

The trip is currently planned for October 29th to November 7th 2016 and there will be an information session for successful applicants on the week commencing Jul 25th with a £5,000 deposit due by July 29th.
