DERRY GAA: McGurk set to be named new Derry manager

Lavey's Colm McGurk is expected to be ratified as the new Derry Senior Hurling manager by the County Board later today.

A spokesperson for the Oak Leaf Board confirmed there was only one nomination to succeed Tom McLean who stepped down from the post in September after two years as senior manager, having led the county to its first Christy Ring Cup final in 2015.

McGurk played both hurling and football for Derry during a distinguished county career and was a member of the All Ireland winning panel of 1993. He also holds an All Ireland club medal from Lavey’s 1991 victory in the senior club championship.

His hurling career with Derry saw McGurk saw him win an Ulster title in 2000 while he helped Lavey to 12 Senior county titles.

The Lavey club man will be joined by former Slaughtneil senior manager, Michael Glover in a coaching support capacity with the rest of his back room team yet to be finalised.

John A. Mullan is also expected to be reappointed as the Minor county manager after a season in which the Oak Leaf minors were unfortunate to lose out to Antrim in the Ulster semi-final.

It took a highly contested late Antrim free to force the game into extra-time with the Saffrons eventually emerging 4-23 to 3-11 winners yet the performance will give Mullan plenty to build on for 2017.
