Adam Liddle's relief for Derry City

The 20-year-old, who came off the bench to fire home a stoppage time leveller against Finn Harps on Friday evening, conceded all he wanted to do was to make sure he made proper connect after Walter Figueira’s great piece of skill had created the chance.

“I’m absolutely delighted to come here and on my home debut, getting the equaliser in the last minute, is brilliant,” he stated.

“I was itching to get on just to show what I can do and hopefully this goal will help me to continue to show people what I can do.

“I saw him do a lovely piece of skill and get to the byline and I was thinking to get a little bit of movement so that he could cut it back; then I was just thinking to make sure I would get as much connect on it as possible and lucky for me it went in.

“It was brilliant to go over and celebrate with the fans, who were great all night.”

Liddle, who joined City on loan from Reading until July, admits that former Derry front man David Parkhouse played a part in his move to Foyleside.

The striker’s agent is also the Strabane man’s representative and the minute he knew that Declan Devine’s side had shown an interest in him, he was very keen to make the move happen.

In fact, after flying in for a trial Liddle picked up an injury and had to return to the English Championship club to receive treatment, but he did eventually make the return to the Candy Stripes and got his loan move sorted out.

“I was very keen to come here and when I got that injury sorted out back in Reading, I was keen to come back and thankfully everything got sorted and I’m here now,” he insisted.

“My agent sorted the deal and then obviously last year Parky (David Parkhouse), who is also with my agent, played here last year and he did well here last year.

“I got a bit of knowledge about what the league is about and definitely want to come to gain first team experience, which will help me in my career.”

A goalscorer for the Royals from Under-18 level, Liddle came through the ranks and made a big impression within Scott Marshall’s Under-23s, but he knows the switch to the League of Ireland is a big step for him and give him a chance of playing competitive senior football.

“The first two games have been tough,” he explained.

“Obviously we know that this league isn’t easy and to be honest every game we play we think is going to be tough for us, so we just have to take each game as they come and hopefully grind out results.”
